A conversation to try

Begin with what
matters to each person.

This self-guided framework can help structure a voluntary, respectful conversation. Choose a time when everyone can participate clearly and without pressure.

  1. Agree on the question.
Choose one topic: a concern about cannabis, a caregiving preference, or a shared household boundary.
  2. Listen without interruption.
Give each person time to describe their experience, hopes, and concerns.
  3. Reflect before responding.
Try: “What I hear matters to you is…” Then ask whether you understood.
  4. Separate facts from assumptions.
Write down health or legal questions that need a qualified professional's input.
  5. Choose one next step.
Agree what each person will do and when you will check in again.

Useful words when a conversation gets stuck.

“Help me understand.”

What is most important to you about this? What would you like me to hear?

“Here is my concern.”

Describe what you noticed and how it affected you. Leave room for the other person's experience.

“What can we try?”

Look for an action that respects everyone's needs, then agree how to review it.

This is general communication education, not legal advice or a formal mediation service. A self-guided conversation is not appropriate when there is abuse, coercion, or immediate danger. Seek suitable professional support.
